WUHS' Yoh Theatre takes its act on the road - All the way to Edinburgh, Scotland

Woodstock Union High School announced today the triumphant return recently of twenty-three middle- and high-school Yoh Theatre players from a visit to Edinburgh, Scotland. While in Edinburgh, the players delivered four highly acclaimed and sold-out performances of 30 Futurist Plays from Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind (30 plays in 60 minutes) by Greg Allen at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The Fringe Festival is the largest performing arts festival in the world.

The players were joined on their two-week tour by Yoh Theatre director Marcia Bender as well as carpenter Fred Schlabach, nurse Naomi Moyer, and Artistree Theatre Educator Abbie Levinson.

Before arriving in Scotland, the players stopped in London to tour the Globe Theatre and St. Paul’s Cathedral. They also visited the West End to see The Great Gatsby (a show boasting a $25-million budget); rode on the London Eye; and spent time walking, shopping, and sampling English fare.

While at the festival, the players attended performances by other high-school groups attending the Fringe Festival under the auspices of The American High School Theatre Festival (AHSTF). They also participated in a workshop with Baby Wants Candy, a globally recognized comedy troupe.

Before departing Scotland, the players toured Stirling Castle, visited Loch Lomond, climbed Arthur’s Seat, attended the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, and explored Edinburgh’s shops, restaurants, and theatres.

For most of the players, traveling abroad and performing at the Fringe Festival helped to heighten their excitement for the start this week of the Yoh Theatre’s 2025 season.

“Coming home from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival has boosted my excitement for the coming Yoh season,” said Sophomore Libby Fraga. “Going from performing at the Fringe with a talented group of my peers and being surrounded by theater to sitting in my bed doing absolutely nothing has truly put into perspective how much of my life revolves around Yoh Theatre.”

The curtains will rise for Yoh Theatre Preview night at the WUHS Auditorium on Thursday, August 28, at 7 pm. The Preview Night typically includes an informal meeting for all Woodstock students and parents interested in Yoh Theatre (5:30 pm), followed by a potluck dinner for Yoh players and parents (6:15 pm). The preview performance, in which the shows for the entire year will be revealed, will immediately follow the dinner.

“The preview performance is open to the public, and everyone is encouraged to come,” said Yoh’s Director Bender. “Consisting of short scenes and songs from each show of the year, it’s always a great way to kick off the Yoh season, and it brings excitement and energy to all involved.”
