Enroll a New Student
Welcome!
We are excited that you and your family are joining our school community!
PLEASE READ the following information carefully to help you through the registration process. Things you may need to do before starting registration and any required documents to complete registration are outlined for a smooth and efficient process. If you encounter any problems or have any questions, please email the Central Registrar at Rayna.Bishop@mtnviews.org.
Prekindergarten: Start Here
Prekindergarten registration is a 2-step process:
Step 1
Visit the MVSU PreK page first to complete the application for a spot in a district Pre-K program.
Step 2
If there is space available in the program, the prekindergarten coordinator will contact you to confirm that your child can be enrolled, and then you can proceed with the formal Pre-K to 12 registration process below.
PLEASE DO NOT SKIP STEP 1
If your child is not on the Step 1 initial application list, it invalidates their registration and lottery inclusion (should one be necessary).
Grades K-6: Start Here
First, determine if you need to complete an “ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHOICE” application:
(Only available to In-District resident students.)
The elementary school in your town of residence is considered your “home” school. (Bridgewater’s & Pomfret’s “home” school is WES grades K-4, and TPVS grades 5 & 6.)
If you wish to enroll in a MVSD elementary school in a different town than the one in which you live, you must first apply and be approved for Intra-District School Choice.
The school your child attended for prekindergarten does not automatically guarantee entrance to that school’s kindergarten if you are not a resident of that town.
All New Students
If you are registering more than one student, regardless of grade or school, you only need one parent account in Alma Start. Each student will have their own registration page and require their own documentation, but you can complete the process from that one parent account.
Quite a few questions are solely for mandated state reporting, and not for our own use (e.g. race, ethnicity, etc.). Please answer these questions so that we don’t have to disturb you with a call to complete the information.
Documents you must upload for all students include:
The student’s birth certificate
TWO Proof of Residency documents as outlined below
Mountain Views School District Residency Verification
The Mountain Views School District (MVSD) has a legal obligation to its taxpayers to fund the education of only those students who physically reside within the boundaries of the district or who are enrolling from approved tuitioning school districts. The MVSD School Board has established policies and procedures in conjunction with that obligation, requiring documentation to verify residency.
Residency Determination Process
To determine if a student is a legal in-district resident or a sending district resident, as defined by Vermont law, parents/legal guardians or emancipated minors must submit two proof of residency documents as outlined below. These documents are required prior to the student attending school. Consistent with state statutes, the Superintendent has the authority to refuse enrollment or dismiss students who are not legal residents of either the district or an approved sending district.
Required Documentation
Each family must provide one document from Section A and one document from Section B. These lists are not interchangeable. Failure to provide the appropriate documents will result in an enrollment delay or denial.
All documents must:
Be current (issued within the last 60 days where applicable)
Show the name and address of the parent/legal guardian
Match the residence being verified
Section A — One of the following:
If you own your home:
Copy of most recent Homestead property tax bill
Copy of a non-Homestead property tax bill, accepted only if the
town of residence verifies a reported Homestead status changePurchase & Sales Agreement (only for recent transactions)
If you rent your home:
Copy of signed and dated current lease agreement
Notarized letter from landlord affirming tenancy (even if your
“landlord” is a partner or relative)
Section B — One of the following:
valid Vermont Driver’s License
current Vermont vehicle registration
valid Vermont Voter Registration
Residency Defined
A legal resident of Vermont and of a school district is someone who meets the following criteria:
Domicile: a person’s true, fixed, and permanent home. You maintain a principal dwelling place in the school district indefinitely and, if temporarily absent, intend to return there, coupled with an act or acts consistent with that intent. A person may have only one residence at a given time.
Physical presence: You are physically present in Vermont for more than 183 days of the taxable year.
Homestead: A homestead is the principal dwelling and parcel of land surrounding the dwelling, owned and occupied by the resident as the person's domicile. All property is considered non-homestead, unless it is declared as a homestead.
Residency: False Claims
Falsifying residency within the jurisdiction of a supervisory union school district is illegal and punishable by law. 13 V.S.A. § 3016
MVSD reserves the right to request up-to-date information/proof of residency if the district has reason to to believe the conditions of residency have changed. Residency can be reviewed at any time, and findings and determinations will be independent from anything previously decided.
The district shall, consistent with State statute, deny enrollment for pupils who are not legal residents of the district or who do not meet the statutory exceptions to the residency requirements.
